Every year, hundreds of people embark on a journey to make themselves more fit and healthy. This is a great process, that requires a lot of dedication. However, many people run into a motivational plateau as well as a fitness one. To overcome this, you need to get psyched up and motivate yourself. By following these simple tips, you can ensure that you get motivated and get to your fitness goal.
Set specific, measurable fitness goals. Being able to run a mile; for example, is an easily measured fitness goal. Set your fitness goals around things you can physically do, rather than on weight loss. This will make it easier to determine if you are meeting your goals, whereas focusing on weight means that you have to rely on the accuracy of a scale, which will not measure the differences between water weight lost, added muscle weight, et cetera.
Surround yourself with like-minded people. If you surround yourself with sedentary people, you are more likely to sit around and be pressured into hanging out with the sedentary friends you have. This does not mean you have to completely exclude your sedentary friends from your life, but it’s important to note that you will see more success as you hang out with people who will motivate you through your fitness goals.
Stay positive, even if you do not meet your goals. It’s very critical for motivation that you do not get discouraged or in a slump just because you’ve not met a goal. Otherwise, you will not meet other goals beyond it.
Read about other people’s fitness successes. You can do this online, or you can watch inspirational sports movies. Chose movies based on a true story, rather than fictional stories. Stories based on real events are inherently more inspirational, and will not give you unrealistic expectations.
Do not give up, under any circumstances. You can delay your goals, set them back a few days or weeks (this is particularly true if you fall ill, or get injured and need to rest for a spell). Once you are back on your feet, begin with your goals again. Do not take ‘no’ for an answer. Know that you can reach your goals, even if it takes a long time, even if that is much longer than expected.
One of the biggest problems that people who train for marathons run into is getting injured. This can seriously set you back on your timeline, especially if it is a long-term injury requiring rehabilitation. The absolute worst thing you can do in this situation is to continue to work on your goals, despite your injury. Doing so can cause your injury to worsen and get more severe elsewhere.
Fitness is a mental decision above all others. In order to succeed in fitness goals, you need to commit to them. Fitness is much easier when your mind is already aboard and ready to go. By following these simple tips, you can ensure that you are successful on the fitness road ahead.
